Dark Web Survey

Work with 11-18 year olds? Have your say.  Click on this link to open the survey

NCA CEOP’s ThinkuknowThe Children’s Society, and Marie Collins Foundation are looking to find out more about the extent of young people’s experiences using the dark web, and how they can be protected from encountering the associated risks. We’re interested in hearing from all professionals for  secondary-aged young people, including those without knowledge or experiences of young people using the dark web.

The dark web refers to an area of the internet that isn’t visible by search engines and requires the use of software such as Tor (The Onion Router). This software works to repeatedly encrypt networks, making a user anonymous. Many people use Tor to access the open web anonymously. This survey is focused on young people who are using software such as Tor to access the dark web.

The dark web is composed of sites called ‘Hidden services’ where not only the user, but also the website itself, has their anonymity protected by Tor. Hidden services can be used legitimately, for example, to access hidden forums, for whistleblowing or to allow members of the public to share sensitive knowledge about crimes without the risk of reprisals. However, lots of hidden services contain criminal material. The Children’s Society have further information for professionals about young people and the dark web

This survey asks questions about your experiences, in a professional setting. The survey contains 19 questions and will take roughly 10-15 minutes to complete.

Note that this survey is for research purposes only; please do not disclose details that might identify people in a situation of concern. If you think that a child may be at immediate risk of harm or abuse, or an offence is being committed, call 999.
